Interactive Learning Resources
Here are a bunch of learning games, activities, cards and posters that I have designed and made. Most are free to download and use with acknowledgement. In some cases there is a link to my resources shop where you can buy stuff. Please use with acknowledgement of the author. They may not be used for commercial purposes without permission. I hope they are useful for you.
Board Game
Who Wants to Be a Tribal Heir?
This game is designed to help young people explore the life of young people in the early Hebrew narratives and ask questions about how God is present in difficult circumstances. It takes 20-30 minutes to play, followed by group discussion. There are two downloads – a PDF file of the game instructions and cards (about 21mb) and a JPG file of the game board which is 41 x 54 cm in size.

Discipleship Posters
This is a series of posters with statements about Christian formation, education and discipleship, designed to prompt discussion. How do we grow disciples? What processes do we use? Does the church have shared language for this? What does it mean to be intentional about how we form lifelong disciples. I will be adding more posters from time to time.
The Resources Game
I was asked to lead a workshop on youth ministry resources at a Scripture Union Training Day. Rather than just do all of the talking myself, I designed this game so that everyone could contribute. It consists of a playing board made up of A3 printed sheets which you place on the floor, and the participants become the playing pieces. You still have to provide resources yourself, but the game model is adaptable for other porpoises. : ) I suspect that I stole the idea from Dino Anderson.

Imago Vita
Photo Discussion Cards
Imago Vita or Pictures of Life is a set of 86 A5 photos produced on behalf of eLM: equipping leadership for mission for the Uniting Church, VicTas Synod. The varied images are chosen for use in a range of group activities, from community-building, to reflecting on memories, taken by exploring current issues, and envisioning the future. The set is accompanied by activity suggestions for leaders. The photographs were taken by myself, Peter Batten and Hoon You. I wrote the activity guide and the layout was done by eLM. The resources are free to download and copy but may not be sold without permission. The photos remain the property of the photographers.

We recommend getting the file printed at somewhere like Officeworks and then laminating the cards.
Saying Sorry Game
Here’s a game that I made up for Alive@5 on the theme of saying sorry and forgiveness. It’s designed for a mixed group of parents and primary school age children.
Sit in a circle. A volunteer stands in the middle – they are the spinning pointer. This person closes their eyes and spins around and then stops and points at someone in the circle. The person in the centre then chooses and reads aloud a SITUATION CARD (Child Situation if its a child, Parent Situation if its a parent). The person who they’re pointing at then takes a RESPONSE CARD and says the response or does the action on the card (we had an adult there helping the child to understand it if needed). Those around the circle then give a thumbs up or thumbs down, depending on whether they think the response is helpful or unhelpful. There was then opportunity to discuss it, particularly if the reaction was mixed. The “pointee” then becomes the pointer for the next turn

Childrens Spirituality
Discussion Cards
This is a set of twelve cards on themes in the spirituality of children, developed from the works of Rebecca Nye, James Fowler, John Westerhoff and myself. Images are from Shutterstock, iStockPhoto and myself. People are invited to discuss a series of questions in relation to cards of their choice.
- What aspect of the spiritual life of a child might this describe?
- Tell a story or give an example of this aspect of children’s spirituality.
- What are some ways of supporting, resourcing or guiding children in this aspect?
- What questions do you have about this aspect of children’s spirituality?
