See The Light
An Invocation and a.Blessing inspired by Matthew 5:13-20.
Did you see the light today –
rubbing sleepy eyes
as golden beams pierced the bedroom curtains;
holding your breath in awe
as the sun spilled bright dawn over the hills?
Did you see the light today –
summoning the the hum of insects;
calling the magpies to morningsong
and neighbour’s hens to cluck and crow?
Did you see the light today –
caressing the brow of a loved one
fresh from the shower to face the morning;
reflecting in your mirror
as you wondered what the day will bring?
Did you see the light today –
piercing the morning newscast
as doctors wept in war-zone hospitals
and political fiction was exposed;
as calls for deep conversation
challenged sound bites of division?
Did you see the light today
as you came to this familiar place –
in the smiles of cherished friends,
in ones whose names you are still learning,
in the small and the quiet,
in ones who still grieve,,
in those who always demand more
from you and from life itself?
May we see the light today.
May this light reveal us and disturb us.
May we be unmasked by the light of God.
May this light warm us and enlighten us.
May we know by this light that we are beloved.
May we see the light of Christ –
the gifting of God-with-us
in the flickering candle,
in the suffering Cross,
in the tearing bread,
in the spilling wine,
in the welcoming meal,
in the branding blessing,
that calls us to live,
with fierce and gentle hope,
for today and tomorrow.
May we see the light of Christ this day.
Amen.

So as we go…
May we see the light today –
as we rally in drumming song
against the darkness,
as we chorus in solemn prayer
for the long night ahead,
as we grip hands in a peace
that will outlast all division,
and step together in a dance
that declares life and love and justice.
May we live unafraid in this light –
light that reveals us,
light that embraces us,
light that empowers us
in life and death and life to come,
for God is this light
and darkness cannot put it out.
May we be touched by the light of God today –
among us, above us, beyond us, before us.
May we continue to be and become
bearers of the light of God,
in the name of Christ
who is the Light of the world.
Amen.
